Create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit.

Overwhelm (Secular)

Paraphrased advice from Mark Waldman (Loyola University):

Ask yourself this question:  What causes me to feel overwhelmed?  Write  a list of 5 things, then look at your list and see if there’s a common thread. What kinds of thoughts are involved, and what does it really feel like, when you are overwhelmed?

“Overwhelmed” is: The lived experience of feeling helpless. You might have unmet expectations. You might be caught up in a chaotic environment. You might feel confused, uncertain, or lost. Basically, you feel out of control.

What’s happening in the brain those overwhelming feelings creep in?  You are having too many unconscious positive and negative thoughts going on, and when this occurs, your prefrontal lobes shut down. Then the fantasy and imagination networks in your brain begin to flood you with worries and ideas, further disrupting other neural networks. Suddenly you discover you can’t turn off those excessive thoughts and feelings and instead you get lost in them.

There is a simple solution: You can train yourself to mindfully observe all those chaotic thoughts and feelings and hopes and fears. When you stop judging and reacting to them, you’ll immediately feel calmer. You don’t have to do anything!  Soon you’ll realize that it’s just a bunch of prefrontal “noise” and in this more relaxed state of awareness you can begin to intuitively – not logically – find simple creative solutions to organize your mind and plot a course toward success. You see, it’s not your brain that gets overwhelmed; it’s just a tiny area of consciousness called the mind!

Recognize the thought pattern you are in, and INTERRUPT it. One way to do this is to write down 2 columns - what IS NOT acceptable in my life or thoughts, and what MUST be in my life and thoughts, from this day forward. (Start imagining what can go right instead of imaging what can go wrong.)

discernment

Good article by Bruce Cook: Eight Greek words for Love. God's love is agape love.

"...it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails" (1 Cor. 13:4-8 NIV).
"We will be able to quickly discern whether something came from the Lord by looking at whether it is characterized by and saturated with God's agape love. For example, if I were to receive a strategy for my family from the Lord during my time on the 8th Mountain, it would be full of these attributes of His love. The implementation of this strategy from the 8th Mountain would result in my family experiencing the patience of the Lord through me, the kindness of the Lord through me, the humility of the Lord through me, the truth of the Lord through me, the forgiveness of the Lord through me, and so on and so forth."

Give, but not out of guilt or emotion

EXCELLENT less than 3 minute video teaching from Curt Landry on giving. He explains tithes, offerings, alms, etc. He emphasizes give ONLY out of obedience, never out of guilt or emotion. It appears to be ok to re-post his video, so here it is, but even better log onto his site, or youtube channel.

From Billye Brim: We are to love as God loves. The Spirit must dominate. Be born again. Know the definition of love. Judge yourself against the definition.
Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily. It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong]. It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail. Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening]. Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end]. As for prophecy ([d]the gift of interpreting the divine will and purpose), it will be fulfilled and pass away; as for tongues, they will be destroyed and cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away [it will lose its value and be superseded by truth]. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (AMPC)

"Most of us were cursed by the people that love us the most because they didn't understand it, our parents. They're called word curses, "Oh, you won't amount to anything." But there's a way to reverse it that few have ever tried, and there's a way to be blessed. Once you reverse the curses and walk in the blessings of God..."
"I want to renounce some things that I've spoken over you." And I did it in fear. I asked the Lord to let me take what I spoke on them off of them, and to resay it and put a blessing on them. Then I asked the Lord to, "Let's revoke this thing, and snap the spine of it so it can't affect them anymore from this day forward." So I stood there in my house, and I as their father laid my hand on their face, and I ... that was the first time in my life I blessed something, I blessed my children."

Be thankful for who you are and the life you have, and don't compare yourself to others. Enjoy your own uniqueness, be thankful, bless others, and even more life will come to you.
Some excerpts: "Cultivate a lifestyle of thanksgiving. To cultivate something means it will not happen automatically. You have to stir it up; pursue it...put forth effort to exercise thankfulness.     (One of the primary things that will keep you from living the zoe life is being ungrateful and unthankful. It will darken your spirit. Don’t be among those who bump along complaining, not enjoying life at all. Don’t allow your heart to be darkened by being unthankful.)
Appreciate the things God has provided. It is part of being a good steward...
Take a look around. The people who are receiving are those who are thankful. They have cultivated a lifestyle of thanksgiving. If you want the capacity to receive more, you must have the capacity to appreciate more."

what you practice becomes automatic

Excerpts:
"Those verses reveal the key to living fearlessly! You do it by developing faith in Love. You study and meditate on what the Bible says about love and spend time fellowshipping with Love Himself..."
"For better or for worse, whatever you practice becomes automatic. I found out from experience that if you practice anger, for instance, you’ll get so developed in it you’ll get mad at everything...If you practice love, on the other hand, you’ll develop in it to the point where love just takes over everything. You’ll be walking around all the time looking for opportunities to BLESS people and be kind to them, not because you feel certain emotions or because they’ve been good to you, but because it’s become automatic for you to walk in the God kind of love."
"Talk about a powerful way to live! When you make love your lifestyle, you can triumph in every situation, because “faith...worketh by love” and “overcometh the world” (Galatians 5:6; 1 John 5:4). By the same token, when you violate the law of love, the spirit of fear moves in. And since all unbelief comes from fear, your faith falters. You don’t have to just stand there and let it happen though. You can stop the moment you miss it and repent. If you say something ugly to someone, you can immediately ask that person to forgive you and get right back on your love walk."

attitude of gratitude (secular)

From Brian Tracy: Practice An Attitude of Gratitude.     "An attitude of gratitude causes you to be more sensitive and aware of people around you. The more gratitude you have, the more gratitude you express, the better and more positive your personality is, the higher your self-esteem becomes, the more popular and liked you are by all the people around you, and the better you feel. You should always be looking for ways to make people (especially your loved ones) feel important, valuable and loved."
